Learning of predictive relations between events depends on attention, not on awareness.

چکیده
It is generally assumed that storing predictive relations between two events (E(1) consistently precedes E(2)) in memory as bi-directional associations does not require conscious awareness of this relation, whereas the formation of unidirectional associations that capture the direction of the relation (priming e(1) activates e(2), but e(2) not e(1)) does. This study reports a set of experiments demonstrating that unidirectional associations can be formed even when awareness of the relation is actively prevented, if attention is "tuned" to process predictive relations. When participants engaged in predicting targets based on cues in an unrelated task before the actual acquisition phase, unidirectional associations were formed during this acquisition phase even though E(1) was presented subliminally. This suggests that although processing the relation between events may often be accompanied by awareness of this relation, awareness is not a prerequisite for the formation of unidirectional associations.

Predicting danger: the nature, consequences, and neural mechanisms of predictive fear learning.
The ability to detect and learn about the predictive relations existing between events in the world is essential for adaptive behavior. It allows us to use past events to predict the future and to adjust our behavior accordingly. Pavlovian fear conditioning allows anticipation of sources of danger in the environment. It guides attention away from poorer predictors toward better predictors of da...
متن کاملOpioid receptors in the nucleus accumbens regulate attentional learning in the blocking paradigm.
Fear learning depends on prediction error, or the discrepancy between the actual and expected outcome of a conditioning trial. These experiments used blocking and unblocking designs to study the role of opioid receptors in the nucleus accumbens (Acb) in predictive fear learning. Previous fear conditioning to a context blocked later fear conditioning to a conditioned stimulus (CS) in that contex...
متن کاملA Structured Learning Approach to Temporal Relation Extraction
Identifying temporal relations between events is an essential step towards natural language understanding. However, the temporal relation between two events in a story depends on, and is often dictated by, relations among other events. Consequently, effectively identifying temporal relations between events is a challenging problem even for human annotators. This paper suggests that it is import...
متن کاملConcept drift detection in business process logs using deep learning
Process mining provides a bridge between process modeling and analysis on the one hand and data mining on the other hand. Process mining aims at discovering, monitoring, and improving real processes by extracting knowledge from event logs. However, as most business processes change over time (e.g. the effects of new legislation, seasonal effects and etc.), traditional process mining techniques ...
متن کاملThe Role of Temporal Sequence Learning in Guiding Visual Attention Allocation
Models of visual attention allocation suggest that monitoring is driven primarily by proximal cues like bandwidth and value. However, these cues might not always be predictive of the meaningful events an operator is asked to monitor. The aim of the current study is to extend visual sampling models by studying whether sampling can be influenced by more distal cues, like detecting patterns in the...
